Annual donation drive collects winter gloves, mittens and hats for The Wish Project
CHELMSFORD, Massachusetts (Dec. 20, 2024) – The annual Share the Warmth drive at Harrington Elementary School in Chelmsford was once again a success.
The donation drive, a service project organized and presented by the second-grade class, collects new hats, mittens and gloves in all sizes to be donated to The Wish Project in Chelmsford.
In this, its seventh year, the Share the Warmth campaign brought in 440 items between Dec. 2-17.
In order to make the event a success, the second graders took ownership of the initiative by creating posters to advertise their
cause, sharing the message around the school by doing “commercial” announcements via the loudspeaker system and promoting their project to family and friends.
The teachers leading the approximately 100 second grade students with their project were Beth Coddaire, Janet Hoffman, Kaitlyn Nagle and Steve Wurtzler.
Hoffman and Wurtzler helped to deliver the donations to The Wish Project on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 19.
“The volunteers were tremendously grateful for our contribution again this year and just love that the second graders continue to help others in their community by organizing and running this annual event,” Hoffman said.
The project ties into the second-grade curriculum of studying communities, as well as the social/emotional focal points promoting kindness, empathy and gratitude.
In addition, Wurtzler’s class was able to work on their math skills while counting all the donations on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
